Bio
Erin Stoneking is an assistant professor in the Department of Gender and Race Studies at the University of Alabama. As a dramaturg and theatre and performance scholar, Dr. Stoneking’s teaching and research employ the lens of performance to investigate the ongoing production of racialized and gendered identities. Her current research investigates contemporary embodied encounters with the U.S. Southern past with an emphasis on drama and counter-hegemonic performance practices. Recent dramaturgical credits include the world-premiere of Pulitzer-nominated David Feldshuh’s Dancing with Giants at Illusion Theatre (MN) and the position of Resident Dramaturg with English Theatre Düsseldorf. In addition, she has led community-based, feminist performance workshops in New York and Germany. At present, she is serving as dramaturg on a new musical theatre piece about the life and career of under-recognized African American actor, singer, and composer Hylan “Dotts” Johnson.
She has previously taught at High Point University and Cornell University, and holds a Collaborative Arts Research Initiative Faculty Fellowship through the College of Arts and Sciences to support interdisciplinary and collaborative arts research. At UA, she teaches courses on performance studies and race and gender in contemporary U.S. drama.
