On Wednesday, November 6, our department co-sponsored an interesting and important symposium on campus race relations. The event was held from 1:00-4:00pm in Gorgas 205 and was titled “Student Perceptions of Race Relations at the University of Alabama: Historical and Contemporary Perspectives.” The symposium featured several researchers from other universities who are experts on race relations and public opinion. In addition, several UA faculty members participated as well (including members of our department). The symposium was centered around the results of a survey of students’ racial attitudes and attitudes toward campus race relations that was conducted earlier this year (January/February of 2013). Over 4,000 UA students responded to the first “UA Racial Climate Survey” and the symposium was the first opportunity for the public to see the results. There was also a presentation that includes an analysis of the racial attitudes of Greek students (as compared to non-Greek students).
