The Gender and Race Studies Department solicits entries for the thirtieth annual
Women’s Studies research paper competitions and the second annual
African American Studies paper competition. The department will offer three
awards.

The Elizabeth Meese Memorial Award in Feminist Research and the
Stephen Karatheodoris Memorial Award will be awarded to undergraduate
or graduate student papers that demonstrate a formidable dedication and
outstanding ability in the area of feminist theory and research.
The Rhoda E. Johnson Award will be awarded to an undergraduate student
paper that demonstrates outstanding ability in the field of African American
Studies.

Winners will receive an honorarium and will be recognized on Honors Day.
Deadline for entries is January 30, 2012 by 4:00pm. All submissions must be
turned in to the Department of Gender and Race Studies’ main office in 104
Manly Hall.

Eligibility: The paper must have been written to fulfill a course assignment
during the spring, summer, or fall semesters of 2011 by a student currently
enrolled at the University of Alabama. Applicants may submit only one paper.
Rules of Entry: The manuscript should be no longer than 20 pages, including
footnotes, typed and double-spaced. Three copies should be submitted.
Student’s name, department, local address, email address, telephone number, and the title of the paper should appear on a separate cover sheet. Do not place your name or other identifying information on your paper as a running head. Your name should not be listed as the page header on pages of your paper.
